Location types: pick, bulk, staging

Last updated May 2026

Not every location does the same job. Giving each a type lets Klovio route work to the right places.

The common types

  • Pick — small, accessible bins where pickers pull from. Fast-movers belong here.
  • Bulk — overflow and reserve storage, often pallets up high. Stock waits here until it’s needed to replenish a pick bin.
  • Staging — temporary holding for inbound goods or packed outbound orders. See Set up and use staging areas.
  • Receiving — where freshly received stock lands before put-away.

Set a location’s type

Set the type when you create a location, or edit it later under Warehouse → Warehouses → Locations.

Why types matter

  • Picking is directed to pick locations, not bulk.
  • Replenishment moves stock from bulk into pick bins.
  • Staging holds stock but is excluded from picking, so an order can’t be picked from an outbound staging lane.

Keep it simple

Most warehouses need only pick, bulk and staging. Add finer types only when a real workflow needs the distinction.

Tip: put your fastest 20% of SKUs in pick locations near the pack stations, with bulk behind them. Short picker walks are the single biggest speed win.
