Organize categories into a hierarchy

Last updated May 2026

Once you have many categories, a flat list gets unwieldy. Klovio lets categories nest into a parent → child hierarchy.

Create a sub-category

  1. Go to Inventory → Products → Categories.
  2. Click Add new.
  3. Set a parent category to make this one a child of it.
  4. Save.

For example:

Food
  ├─ Oils & vinegars
  ├─ Grains & rice
  └─ Spices
Packaging
  ├─ Boxes
  └─ Tape & labels

How the hierarchy behaves

  • Filtering a parent includes all of its children — filter Food and you see oils, grains and spices together.
  • Reports can roll up to the parent or break out by child.
  • A product belongs to one category (usually the most specific child).

Don’t over-nest

Two levels handle almost every catalog. Three is occasionally useful; deeper than that and people stop knowing where things go.

Tip: design the hierarchy with the people who pick and count. The structure that matches how they think of the stock is the one that gets used correctly.
